The story was far too impersonal, abstract and admonishary, almost hurried. The tile was pretentious as Asia is a pretty big audience, so I suspect the Publisher had something to do with it. Mohsin should have lived a lot longer with this novel as the story had potential, but he seems to have rushed for some reason.
The novel is a self help book for every Pakistani looking to break the hard mould of poverty, depravity and gloom. But the writer knows its a lost cause, as the class of people depicted as protagonists are illiterate to the core. They are vulnerable and are unable to think for themselves. They need structures to climb upon in order to reach the higher class. The institutions and structures on offer are predatory in nature, which is the primary problem in Pakistan. So basically, you have to survive these institutions if you want to prosper, and that is the most difficult bit, for what else can you rely on apart from sound principles of life? Whats wrong with having solid principles? Well for once, how do you know that these principles will work in your daily struggle for excellence? Also these principles are common knowledge, so how will you make a difference if everyone around you has knows the same as you? And lastly, how do you the others are not cheating by breaking their principles in order to move up the greasy pole of success?
