Naya Ghar by Intizar Husain

The book is a study of man's relationship with his house. A man's house is his whole world where he finds most comfort and content. Intizaar has produced a remarkable tale based on this simple and widely understood relationship set in the context of creation of Pakistan. I loved the way he was able to keep the best for the last which I won't spoil for other prospective readers.
All I can say is that the basis of hate between India and Pakistan is avarice, the seeds were firmly planted by the two governments when they decided to annexe the empty properties of the migrated minorities, thus with one stroke of a pen declaring each other enemies for life. Their current state of legendary animosity is a result of the rash action taken all those years ago.
The book also features a number of old people, like the protagonist's mother who lives with him as well as mentions of plenty of older people and their views. This reliance of retained knowledge on the older generation is somewhat receded in the current age, with information and at least pseudo knowledge is freely available on Sheikh Google, which somehow decreases the value of older generation in today's world.
